A complex housing that needed repeatable geometry across every production lot
Northstar needed a turbine housing capable of maintaining tight interface dimensions across a high-volume production program. The original process required multiple machining setups and created unnecessary inspection points, adding time and risk to every lot without improving the part.
MachiniX consolidated the critical features into a more controlled machining sequence, reducing handling while maintaining the required dimensional relationships. Fixturing was redesigned around the interface features specifically, so the housing only needed to be repositioned once between rough and finish operations instead of three times.
The team also reviewed the inspection plan alongside the machining sequence, moving critical dimensional checks to the points in the process where they carried the most value rather than inspecting after every setup out of habit.
01) Fewer setups
Consolidating the machining sequence reduced the housing from three setups to one, cutting handling time and the opportunities for fixturing error.
02) Repeatable interface dimensions
Critical interface features are now held to the same reference points on every part, keeping dimensional consistency across the full production lot rather than lot to lot.
03) Reduced inspection points
Inspection was realigned to the machining sequence itself, checking critical dimensions where they're set rather than after every operation.
04) Production readiness
The revised sequence supports sustained high-volume output without added cycle time, giving Northstar a repeatable process rather than a one-time fix.
